Design for commemorative Brexit-themed 50p coin revealed
The Royal Mint, which has a tradition of making coins to mark historic moments, has designed the coin to mark the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union.
The design of a new 50p coin that will mark the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union has been revealed to Design Week.
Images of the commemorative coin, designed by The Royal Mint, show the words “Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations” on one side. The date of Brexit, 29 March 2019, is written at the bottom of the coin, in images obtained from The Treasury.
The coin was announced yesterday in The Budget which was delivered by Chancellor Philip Hammond. The coin will be available from Spring 2019.
Budget documents state: “The Royal Mint has a long-established tradition of producing coins in order to commemorate historic moments, including the 2012 Olympics, the UK’s accession to the European Economic Community, and the centenary of the First World War.
“In line with this tradition, the Royal Mint will produce a coin to commemorate the UK leaving the European Union.”
It is understood that Hammond asked The Royal Mint to have the coin designed to mark the occasion and that this design will need to be signed off by the Queen before being finalized.
The announcement has been met with a mixed reaction.
Shame it’ll only be worth 10p by the time they are done with negotiations!
