Learn about design before DTP packages

I saw the fuss (Letters, DW 26 November) about whether a design student needs to learn how to use a Mac or gain design experience first.

In the days before computers there were designers. Whatever tools there are to assist in design should be used, but the principles of design should be taught first.

There are plenty of people with a PC and a simple DTP program turning out sub-standard work who do not know the first thing about design or good typography.

If a student learns mostly on the computer, they are then limited in their skills. Learn design first, then learn how to use software and put into practice the design principles.
